    • Teaching practical skills for microstructure characterization by means of light and electron microscope
    • Practical determination of material characteristics

    • Preparation of a ground joint
    • Operation of a light microscope and evaluation of the ground joint
    • Functionality of a SEM, investigation of different materials and typical fracture surfaces
    • Determination of transformation temperatures as a function of the alloy composition
    • Deformation of metals and polymers

    Learning Objectives

    • to enable students to master the scientific fundamentals of biomaterials and the medical technology required for them and to have a good overview of how to select and use biomaterials in a safe and cost-effective way.
    • to enable students to test and evaluate current and future biomaterials on the basis of their solid biomaterials science knowledge and to develop new biomaterials.
    • to enable students to acquire information about biomaterials, to analyse it critically and to communicate this information to colleagues, doctors, patients and the general public.

Summer term 2021

  • Materials science internship

    Familiarization with methods characterizing solids, specific fields of application and limits, recognition of the influence of manufacturing and processing parameters on the material structure and properties Experiments are carried out on the following topics:

    • Material production: presentation and densification of powders, production of polymer-fibre composites, thermoplastics, glass synthesis, porcelain, sol-gel coatings
    • Material characterization: quantitative microstructural analysis, confocal laser scanning microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, optical microscopy, electron microscopy, ellipsometer
    • Material properties: Electrical conductivity, surface energy and wetting, hardness, thermochemical properties, viscosity, chemical resistance of glass surfaces, wetting and interfacial energies
